Why is Raksha Bandhan celebrated?
Raksha Bandhan pays tribute to the bond shared between a
male and his female sibling. Therefore, sisters secure a sacred thread,
referred to as Rakhi, to their brother's right-hand wrist after following a set
of rituals as a symbol of protection and security.
Raksha Bandhan date
Raksha Bandhan is observed on the Purnima Tithi, i.e. on the
full moon day in the month of Shravan. This year, Raksha Bandhan will be
celebrated on August 2023
What is the history of Raksha Bandhan?
There are various legends associated with this festival, and
these narrate how the practice of tying the sacred thread came into being.
Interestingly, one of the stories related to Raksha Bandhan involves a couple.
Here's how one of the legends unfolds:
Draupadi and Shri Krishna
An interesting incident that happened during the times of
the Pandavas explains the significance and history of Rakhi.
After performing the Rajsuya Yagya and establishing
Indraprastha as the capital of King Yudhishthir's kingdom, the Pandavas invited
Lord Krishna to thank him for his support and blessings. Among all the kings
and the guests from the neighbouring regions present was Shishupal, Shri
Krishna's cousin. Shishupal deplored Krishna and humiliated him in the court of
Yudhishthira. He crossed all limits of sinning, and therefore, to punish him,
Shri Krishna released his Sudarshana Chakra at him. However, when the Chakra
returned to Shri Krishna's hand with full force, it made a deep cut in his
finger. After seeing him bleed, Draupadi tore a piece of her clothing to treat
her childhood friend's injury. This gesture of Draupadi won her Shri Krishna's
blessings for a lifetime. And eventually, when the Pandavas couldn't do
anything to protect the honour of Draupadi and save her from getting humiliated
in public, it was Shri Krishna who guarded her. Thus Shri Krishna venerated
Draupadi's gesture and shielded her from the enemies.
